The Tana Forum Secretariat in partnership with the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) organizes the Annual University Essay Competition to provide a platform for young Africans to contribute to discussions on peace, security, and development across the continent.


The 2026 edition focuses on the theme: "Pathways to Peace in Africa: Economic Sovereignty and Geopolitical Transformation." Participants are invited to submit analytical and policy-oriented essays addressing challenges and opportunities related to Africa's future peace and security landscape.

  • Forum dates: October 23–25, 2026.
  • Essay length: Maximum 8 pages.
  • Maximum word count: 7000 words including references.
  • Submission format: Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx).
  • Essay language: English or French.
  • Referencing style: APA 7th Edition.
  • References must include at least 4 books and 6 academic journals.
  • Essay and CV should be submitted by email. 
Eligibility Criteria
  • Applicants must be African citizens.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in recognized higher education institutions in Africa or in the diaspora.
  • Applicants may be pursuing:
  • BA/BSc
  • MA/MSc
  • M.Phil
  • PhD
  • Applicants must be between 15–35 years old.
  • Essays must be original work.
  • Wikipedia cannot be used as a source.
  • AI-generated essays will be disqualified.
  • Essays must address one of the official sub-themes.
